Reality as you know it has been fractured. 

Strange and bizarre things briefly appear, then vanish.

A group of beings, known as the Umbra, have made their way into the astral plane, causing fractures in reality. They seek to use the astral plane as a bridge to gain access into the material worlds.

The Etherians cannot use any physical force to remove the Umbra, but have been successful at confusing them for a time. Unfortunately, the Umbra have became aware of this tactic and the illusions are now failing.
